After months of speculation, Disney finally made its Star Wars expansion plans clear at their annual D23 Expo. On August 15, Disney CEO and Chair Bob Iger announced that Star Wars-themed lands would make appearances at Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. The lands are expected to take theme park guests and transport them to a galaxy far, far away. Guests will be immersed in an environment that features a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading base, and one of the last outposts before wild space. The expansion plans include producing Disney’s largest single-themed land expansions ever at 14 acres per theme park.
During the announcement, Iger said:
“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars. We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”
That last bit gives us an idea of the types of attractions we can expect in these new lands. From the presentation, we learned that these areas will feature two signature attractions including a customized mission where guests will become pilots of the one and only Millennium Falcon.
What Disney didn’t mention was certainly part of the catalyst for this expansion – the major success of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Since opening in 2010, Universal has seen a large spike in attendance numbers pushing the bar for competition higher than Disney has seen in years. This competition will create more quality attractions and should bring in more theme park goers and tourists to each area.
Are you excited for these new Star Wars-inspired lands? What attractions would you like to see?
